What are CoBots?

CoBots are Collaborative Robots that are designed to interact with and "help" humans whether at work, or at home. CoBots are engineered to perform specific tasks, such as: delivering small packages, recording and delivering messages, providing webcam or other remote communications capabilities, and much more.

Most CoBots are usually mobile, able to navigate themselves around typical buildings, even stopping at elevators to ask approaching humans to "please push the elevator button for me."

Cobots are NOT automatons, running independent of all human interaction, they are the opposite -- CoBots are engineered and specifically designed to need human interaction, whether it be voice commands, responses to prompts, or running tasks assigned by a human interacting with some kind of task manager software or program.

Cobots vs Robots: The primary distinction between a Robot and a Cobot is that a Cobot requires and sometimes even seeks out human interaction toward a Prime Directive of Collaborating with Humans on specific tasks. Cobot robots may perform tasks alone, such as delivering medication to a patient, but they always require a human to tell them to do it.

Robots on the other hand, are usually designed to REPLACE humans -- think of all the robotic welders that have replaced humans on car assembly lines, or The Terminator. Robots are generally engineered to run a program or series of software programs and don't require a human to interact with them once the computer program is running.

Examples of Cobots in Sci-Fi Movies: For a sci-fi move visual example, in Star Wars, C3PO is a robot, independent and not needing human interaction; R2D2 is more like a cobot, a helper robot who needs to be told what to do. Maybe a better example would be Marvin from the film A Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. Marvin is not just a collaborative robot, he's a co-dependent robot, who NEEDS to be told exactly what to do, everytime.

Robot Roots: Most people don't know that the word "Robot" comes from the Czech word 'Robota', which means "Forced Labor." It was first popularized by a 1920's theatrical play titled: "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)".

CoBot Roots: The word "CoBot" is an amalgamation of the definitional phrase "Collaborative Robot." The center of Cobot Development and Research is currently Carnegie Mellon University, the birthplace of MANY high-tech wonders.

Hospitals with High-Tech CoBot Robots: We all have seen videos or news reports about Hospital CoBots, that are currently roaming the halls of many state-of-the-art hospitals big and small. Their hospital robotic helper duties include: delivering meals and medications, messages, medical records, and providing remotely located doctors with face-to-screen contact with their patients, or other hospital personnel.
