■ Kids & Adults Love Movies About Robots & CoBots: While the term Collaborative Robot (CoBot) is relatively new, Robots have been central characters in films and videos since literally the beginnings of movie-making history.
■ Early Films with Robots: able to navigate themselves around typical buildings, even stopping at elevators to ask approaching humans to "please push the elevator button for me."> While a few automatons had appeared in very early silent films, many filmies argue that the first robot 'character' depicted on the silver screen was named Q, and appeared in a silent mystery serial (Master Mystery, circa 1920) starring the world-renowned magician, Harry Houdini.
The Tin Man, in MGM's The Wizard of Oz in the late 1930s is considered the first singing/dancing robot on film, and could even be considered a CoBot (Collaborative Robot) since his prime directive was to help Dorothy on her quest to find the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz.
Before the Tin Man most movie robots were depicted as evil and heartless (pun intended) including the 'female' robot in Metropolis (circa 1927). For the most part, robots in film were the monstrous tools of the evil villain, sometimes the powerful sentinal of the hero, but never the hero or central character.
■ In Modern Movies, Robots and CoBots are much nicer. Since Astro Boy in the early 1960s, film (and TV) robots have become more and more likeable, even becoming the central character to the story.
In Star Wars, C3PO and R2D2 were for the most part comic sidekicks, but just a few years later a little robot named Number 5 would capture the hearts of kids and adults in the film Short Circuit as a "young" robot programmed to be "bad" who turns good after inputting lots of data about war, mankind, and the greater good.
